How to read and listen
Thanks for your order. Here's how to open what you bought on the device you have. Download the files on Wi-Fi: the audiobook files are large.
What's in your download
- The ebook (EPUB). Best for phones, tablets and e-readers. The text resizes to fit your screen.
- Two PDFs. The phone PDF is sized for small screens. The reader PDF is a regular page layout for tablets, computers and printing.
- The audiobook as one M4B file. One file with chapter markers, for audiobook apps. There's a male-voice and a female-voice version. Pick one.
- The audiobook as MP3 chapters (zip). One MP3 per chapter, for any music or audio player. Same two voices.
The audiobook is read by a synthetic (AI) voice.
iPhone and iPad
Ebook: Tap the EPUB file. If it doesn't open, tap the Share button and pick Books. It's saved in Apple Books.
PDF: Tap the PDF to read it. To keep it, tap Share, then Books or Save to Files.
Audiobook (M4B): Save the M4B to the Files app. Then open it in an audiobook app that plays M4B files, such as BookPlayer (free). The app shows the chapters and remembers your place. Apple Books may also open an M4B from Files.
Audiobook (MP3 zip): Save the zip to Files and tap it. Files unzips it into a folder. Tap an MP3 to play it, or open the folder from an audiobook app like BookPlayer to keep your place.
Android phones and tablets
Ebook: Open the Google Play Books app and upload the EPUB (in Play Books: Library, then the upload option). Or open it with any EPUB reader app.
PDF: Tap the PDF in your Downloads or Files app. It opens in your phone's PDF viewer or in Google Drive.
Audiobook (M4B): Open it in an audiobook app that reads M4B chapters, such as Smart AudioBook Player or Voice Audiobook Player. A plain music player may play it as one long track without chapters.
Audiobook (MP3 zip): Open the Files app (Files by Google or your phone's own), tap the zip, and choose Extract. Then play the folder in an audiobook app or any music player. The tracks are numbered in order.
Kindle e-readers (Paperwhite, Kindle, Oasis, Scribe, Colorsoft)
Ebook and PDF: Use Send to Kindle. Amazon's Send to Kindle accepts EPUB and PDF files and puts them in your Kindle library.
- Easiest: go to amazon.com/sendtokindle on a computer or phone, sign in, and upload the EPUB. The web upload takes files up to 200 MB, so the whole book fits.
- From your phone: in the Kindle app, use its Send to Kindle option.
Send the EPUB for normal reading; Kindle converts it so the text resizes. Send a PDF only if you want the fixed page layout, which is small on a 6-inch screen.
Audiobook: Kindle e-readers don't play M4B or MP3 files. Play the audiobook on your phone, tablet or computer instead.
Kindle app (on a phone, tablet or computer)
Ebook: Send the EPUB with Send to Kindle (see above). It shows up in the Kindle app under your library, usually within a few minutes.
PDF: Send it the same way, or open it in your phone's own PDF viewer.
Audiobook: The Kindle app doesn't play your own M4B or MP3 files. Use one of the audio apps above.
Amazon Fire tablets
Ebook: Use Send to Kindle, as above. Audiobook: Fire tablets can play MP3 files from the Files or Music app; for M4B chapters, install an audiobook app from the Amazon Appstore.
Computers
Open the EPUB with Apple Books (Mac), Calibre (free, Windows or Mac), or the Kindle app after Send to Kindle. Open the PDFs with any PDF viewer. Play the M4B in Apple Books or Music on a Mac, or VLC (free) on any computer. Play the MP3s in any audio player.
Trouble?
- "Can't open file": make sure the download finished. The audiobook files are large and can take several minutes.
- Zip won't open: use your phone's Files app and choose Extract or Unzip.
- Chapters missing: play the M4B in an audiobook app, not a basic music player, or use the MP3 chapters.
- Still stuck: contact us at the address on our [Contact](/contact/) page.
